Rex Barrett, Projects Director for Ideaworks, provides his insight into what this year holds for our marine department.
According to The Superyacht Report 2017 the 80m+ fleet is set to increase again this year, suggesting the industry trend towards larger and more complex yachts will continue. “When it comes to yacht projects of this scale, simply having the resources; the right people, skills and experience is just not enough” says Rex, “those resources have to be backed up by a stable company, who will be around to support the vessel for years to come”.
“Throughout the course of these projects, the demands on our people change too” Rex says, “With a team of over 75 engineers, ranging from Crestron programmers to satellite engineers, there is very little we can’t do in-house”.
Last year Ideaworks delivered over 250m in new builds, including our largest yacht to date. However, not all our marine projects are new builds. Many yacht projects still come from Clients who have been impressed with our installations in their properties. “Our Clients want their yachts to work in the same way as their homes” Rex adds “We make it possible to move seamlessly between land and sea”.
Refit projects tend to require a quick turnaround and resources need to be readily available. In the last five years, Ideaworks have completed several projects that are primarily located in the Mediterranean. We are in the process of opening a central service and support base for these yachts. This will be manned full-time by Ideaworks’ engineers and hold stock and spare parts, aiding even quicker response times.
Ideaworks are also opening a showroom in Monaco which will enable captains, owners and engineers to experience first-hand some of the new and exciting technologies available for the marine industry. “It will perfectly complement our offices in London, Amsterdam and Hamburg” says Rex.
As the superyacht industry and our projects continue to evolve, our marine department will grow too. Ideaworks has a strong culture of employing people, not just skills. We have the potential to create roles to suit the right candidates and there are lots of opportunities to progress within the marine team. “There has never been a better time to join us. It’s going to be a really exciting year” says Rex, “I would urge anyone who is considering a new challenge to get in touch”.
